Reko Diq – the world’s largest unexploited reserves of copper and gold. Reko Diq has the potential to produce a significant amount of these valuable resources for over 50 years; this project will boost and would have a great impact on economy.

Question is why Reko Diq is Important and why considering as a new game changer for Pakistan? It is significant for several reasons, firstly because this project has the potential to significantly improve Pakistan’s overall economic situation. The income generated from mining can be used for development projects across the country, including Balochistan. Balochistan the real owner of this vast asset is one of the less developed areas of Pakistan. The project can create jobs, improve infrastructure like roads and schools, and generate wealth that benefits the local people. And above all this investment by Saudi Arabia shows their confidence in Pakistan’s economy and strengthens the bond between our two nations. Saudi Arabia is reportedly interested in investing around $1 billion in Reko Diq. This investment would also involve acquiring shares in some of Pakistan’s major energy companies. A committee was formed by the newly elected prime minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to oversee the investment process and ensure everything is done fairly and transparently. Representatives from the government, energy companies, and Balochistan will all be involved. This committee will soon travel to Saudi Arabia to finalize the agreement. The Reko Diq project should prioritize hiring people from Balochistan and offering training opportunities. The company managing the project, Barrick Gold, has already started some social responsibility initiatives by building schools and providing training to local residents. But there are some challenges and grave concerns also and first of all feeling of neglect and marginalization among natives of the province because feeling of aloofness, alienation and depravation is widely spread with central government and people of Balochistan want to ensure benefit from their province’s resources. The government must ensure fair distribution of the wealth generated by Reko Diq and invest in Balochistan’s development. It is also important for the government to be transparent about the agreements with Saudi Arabia and how the project will be managed. This will help build trust and ensure the project benefits all of Pakistan. Need to acknowledge that Reko Diq project has the potential to be a turning point for Pakistan’s economy and Balochistan’s development. By working together transparently and ensuring the benefits are shared fairly, this Saudi investment can be a golden opportunity for our nation. It is essential to address the concerns of the local population regarding the equitable distribution of benefits from resource extraction. Many Balochistan residents feel marginalized and demand greater autonomy and a fair share of revenue generated from their natural resources. The government must ensure that investments in projects like Reko Diq translate into tangible benefits for the local communities. On the corporate front, Barrick Gold, a major stakeholder in the Reko Diq project, has undertaken various corporate social responsibility initiatives. These include establishing schools near the project site and providing technical training to locals, with a focus on empowering women. Such initiatives are commendable and should serve as a model for responsible resource extraction.
