In a desperate bid to prevent a formidable opposition alliance, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari have held separate meetings with Maulana Fazalur Rahman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), in recent days. The government’s top brass is trying to convince Fazalur Rahman to refrain from joining hands with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in its upcoming agitation.

The government’s anxiety stems from Maulana’s significant influence over the religious right and his ability to mobilize support from the masses. His potential alliance with PTI could galvanize opposition against the ruling coalition, posing a substantial threat to their authority.

As the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman can leverage his influence over the religious right to motivate support for the agitation, potentially attracting a large following. Additionally, his party’s strong presence in various regions could further bolster the opposition’s chances.

The government’s efforts to persuade Maulana indicate their concern about the potential consequences of his alliance with PTI. With Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman holding the reins, the government’s hands are tied, and their options are limited.
