Pakistan, not being a drug-producing nation, is considered a transit center for drug supply. According to the latest United States list of major drug-producing countries, Pakistan is one of the most heroin-addicted countries in the world.

A survey revealed that in Pakistan last year, approximately 9 percent of the adult male population and 2.9 percent of the female population were completely invested in drug addiction. Afghanistan, responsible for 75 percent of the world’s heroin production, is also responsible for the supply of drugs to Pakistan, which are then distributed to its provinces. Among all the provinces, one notable area is Balochistan, where routes for drug distribution are located.

According to the UNODC, there are 230,000 drug-addicted people in Balochistan, with 80 percent of them falling in the age range of 20 to 40. They consume various types of drugs, including heroin, opium, caffeine, and alcohol. In Balochistan, there are no areas where drug addicts are not found, which contributes to increased instability in the community, leading to illegality, theft, and a higher crime rate.

While the performance of drug control by the ANP (Awami National Party) in Balochistan is tangible, it is not up to the standards expected. Pakistan Navy seized 600 kilograms of drugs in March 2023, but this result is not impressive when compared to the scale of the drug supply.

However, drug addiction has had a devastating impact on the youth of the province, hindering their contribution to the development of the region. Preventing drug addicts from further engagement with drugs is not only the government’s responsibility but also the society’s duty.

It is essential to raise awareness and show compassion and empathy towards those affected by drug addiction. The government should establish agencies and anti-drug centers to work on prevention and rehabilitation, ultimately eradicating drug addiction in the country and its provinces, safeguarding the well-being of the youth.
