Pakistan is a Muslim country, and Islam has prohibited to commit suicide, but a high suicide rates among Pakistani are being recorded each year.

Earlier in August, a private university student named Hussain illicitly killed himself by tying a noose around his neck. After the investigation, depression was founnd the main reason behind his suicide. The people around him asserting that he got more tension in his educational career and that may triggered his life.

Before that, a student named Zainab “Student of D-pharmacy first year” committed suicide when she found it tough to pass her exams. She disliked studying medicine but was forced by parents to secure admission on self-finance after submitting Rs 6 million. She is not the only medical student; another student named Kashif Raza “Final year of MBBS student” attempted to end his life asserting that he was intentionally failed during his viva test. Though he was protected, after rushing him toward hospital but a huge number of universities failed the students, holding personal grudges against them and wreaking the demise of students.

Shockingly, most number of suicide cases belong to medical students: a final year MBBS student namely Ghulam Muhammad committed suicide when he was toppled to pass the examination, Tariq, the student of medical allegedly committed suicide when he got failed in one paper and a teenage student named Owais killed himself when his parents refused to promote him in the next grade.

During last few years, suicide cases among students have increased rapidly but still the exact amount or official statistics are unknown. From these cases, 42 percent of students belong to school, 23.5 percent from college and 21.1 percent from university. Most of the cases were reported in Punjab with 52.9 percent, in Sindh 23.6 percent, 8.9 percent in KPK and the ratios are unknown in Balochistan.

The common reasons behind this illicit act; failure in exams 23.6 percent, scolded by parents 11.8 percent, 5.9 percent due to the harshness of the teachers and some other menace including penury, ragging, domestic issues and so forth. The methods exploited to commit suicide include hanging, taking poison, gunshot, wrist cutting and so on. The increment of competition and expectations lead to academic stress, depression and other fatal illness among students in recent days.

The students are committing suicide every day just due to pressure come from education. Unfortunately, nothing is being done to prevent suicide and what compelled Hussain, Zainab, Kashif, Ghulam Muhammad, Tariq and Owais to commit suicide. No one knows how much pressure these students face on campus and school premises.

The students commit suicide which is negative for the society, and can spawn deteriorating conditions for the upcoming generation. Undoubtedly, education creates individuals and make the young generation stronger, but what had happened in Pakistan where education is the root behind the suicides of students. Many experts have claimed that students get a lot of pressure when they fail or they cannot compete with others. Sometime the best student of the class get failed, so he/she starts receiving pressure from parents, teachers and society which compel them to suicide.

The students are persistently committing suicides still government is silent. The education system is getting worst day by day and suicide rate is on its peak. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) should take notice about this phenomenon that in future students should not be compelled to commit suicide. The students should gain education with their interest not with the burden of lots of pressure.
