Drug addiction continues to be on the upswing among the people in Pakistan. Pakistan is notorious for many things, but since 20 years drug production and addiction have increased rapidly. The experts have estimated that drug addiction is caused by innumerable problems including poverty, illiteracy and lack of basic healthcare. In recent days drug abuse is growing highly in Pakistan and South Asia. The countries Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Maldives are facing the same phenomenon, but Pakistan is the most deteriorated victim of the drug trade in South Asia. Pakistan is also having the largest heroin customers’ network in the Southwest Asia region.

According to a news report, around 6 percent of the country’s population means less than 6.7 percent million adults are the victims of drugs, of which 78 percent are men and 22 percent are females. Even the women are following men and using drugs which are very harmful for their health. Mostly the drug users are at the age of 25 and 39 years and men use cannabis and opiates. Around 430,000 people are estimated to be injecting drugs in the country. As many as 4.25 million individuals thought to be drug dependent who are in dire need of personnel treatment. If they are not treated immediately, they can lose their lives.

The exporter of heroin in Pakistan increased in the 1980s then it started spreading in the country. Before this, during the 1970s, drugs were virtually unknown in the country. Today Pakistan is the main exporter of heroin, and it is becoming a net importer of drugs.

Though South Asian countries have established many laws to restrain drug addiction to protect the people. In Pakistan, these organizations are also working to fight against this growing problem. Still in the last two decades, they have failed to finish this problem. This shows the failures of these organizations that they are not serious with their work and doing nothing. The issue has been discussed by the United Nations Commission on narcotics for the safety of millions of lives. Although the UN is working to eradicate drug addiction in the entire world, it failed to finish it. Drug users are present in various parts of the world, so the UN is confused about where to work for drug addiction. The UN has suggested that drug addiction countries where it is growing rapidly put more efforts to protect the present and upcoming generation. Unfortunately these countries are misusing the opportunities, receiving from the UN. The funds are being used for the purpose of others, and they have never bothered to work for the safety of millions of precious lives.

Apart from this, drug addiction are most prone to accidents and are highlight risk of HIV/Aids, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, suicide, overdose deaths and cardiovascular disease. The drug users are also called the drug traffickers, and are the main reason for many crimes. The police is totally failed to avoid the people from taking drugs. Whenever we see drug users, they are always using drugs, and only depend on drugs. The police arrested them, but after taking money they leave them. Due to this drug users are growing highly in our country and criminals are not being finished. Police are called the main responsible of the drug addiction.

The concerned authorities should launch campaigns in various parts of the country including schools, colleges and universities to highlight the dangerous effects of drug addiction. Each youth should be aware about the drugs that they should be far away from. Public awareness campaigns should be run on television and radios and more and more recreation facilities should be produced to take the youth off the drugs.
