QUETTA: Two coal miners died of inhaling methane gas while working in a mine in the Duki coal mine field, on Wednesday.

Levies officials said that a group of coal miners went inside a coal mine in the Duki coal field area while digging coal hundreds of feet deep inside where methane gas was accumulated.

The mine workers, while feeling the presence, rushed to come out of the mine. However, two miners who were working deep inside The mine fell unconscious and trapped in the mine.

Soon after receiving information about the incident the other mine workers launched a rescue operation and reached upto the trapped miners but were found dead.

“Bodies after recovering from the affected mine shifted to the district hospital where doctors confirmed their death,” levies officials said and identified them as Abdul Bari and Lali Khan. Bodies were later handed over to the family.

Every year a large number of coal miners lose their lives in Balochistan due to the presence of methane gas in almost all the coal mine fields in the province. Last month 12 coal miners lost their lives when a powerful blast took place in a coal mine in Zardalo area of district Harnai and six injured who were trapped inside the mine after the blast as fire broke out in the mine that blocked the mouth of the mine.

According to the Pakistan Central Mines and Labour Federation’s President Lala Sultan Achakzai around 300 mine workers lost their lives but the concerned authorities report very less officially. He said that the mine owners and concerned department did not ensue proper safety measures in the coal mines which caused tragic incidents in coal mines.
