QUETTA: Former Chief Minister of Balochistan and President of the National Party Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch has stated that the future of the country is linked to the supremacy of democracy, and the weakness of political parties has empowered the establishment.

He expressed these views while addressing a large gathering during the second day of the Asma Jahangir Conference held in Lahore. The conference was hosted by Wasatullah Khan. National Party’s Secretary General Senator Jan Mohammad Buledi MNA Phulain Baloch, and Rajab Ali Rind, along with a large number of party workers were present at the event.

The current government and parliament have not witnessed such a weak institution in history. At present, the country’s constitution is seeking self-preservation. Elections were rigged across the country, including Balochistan, and the buying and selling of votes were rampant. Popular public leaders were ousted from parliament, and those brought in were not politically affiliated and had no connection with the people. Instead of heavy sums of money, parliamentary seats were bartered, which is the most shameful chapter in political history.

Dr. Malik emphasized that for the consolidation of democracy in the country, the implementation of the constitution should be ensured, no obstacles should be placed in political processes, hereditary politics within political parties should be abolished, and instead of the supremacy of one institution, the supremacy of parliament should be accepted, making everyone accountable before parliament.

On a question about the government committee formed for negotiations with angry Baloch, Dr. Malik Baloch said that Islamabad’s overall mindset, including political parties, judiciary, and the establishment, only superficially views Balochistan’s issues. The political and economic aspects of Balochistan’s issues are intertwined, ensuring the right to vote and the freedom to express opinions for the people of Balochistan in the political aspect should not be deprived.
